Strawberries, Strawberries, Strawberries.

Strawberries, Strawberries, Strawberries.

I love this time of year. The weather is warmer, the days brighter and longer and, best of all, our local pick-your-own farm opens its gates for strawberry picking! (And other berry delights, but on this day our focus was on strawberries!)

If you haven't taken your children to a pick-your-own farm yet I really recommend you do. Choose a sunny, warm day, pack the suncream and some water and head out into the countryside. No need to take snacks, the strawberries will keep them going!

It is a really fun family activity enjoyed by all ages. Isabelle (6) loved filling her basket, Joe (3) loved picking more than his sister and Sam (2) just enjoyed sitting in the plants eating them! Not only did we gain two and half big punnets of strawberries, but we spent time together, they helped each other and they learned where strawberries came from.

As you know, I am a big advocate of getting children involved in their food to help them explore different tastes and flavours. I know strawberries aren't particularly exotic but the principle is the same. Visiting a PYO farm is such a great way to get them involved.  My Clean Little Tummies were so excited to get home to make Strawberries Smoothies for their afternoon snack; they counted their own strawberries into the blender and enjoyed every mouthful. While the boys napped, Belle and I then made chia jam together with some more of the strawberries. And with several bags packed into the freezer there will be plenty more strawberry recipes coming from this kitchen and these Clean Little Tummies! Next is Strawberry Chia Jam Slice! We shall definitely be back for more, and will be doing some vegetable picking later in the season too.

You can find your nearest PYO in the UK here.

Let me know if you visit your local PYO and what you pick!
